Biblical Significance
Biblical Significance
Myrrh makes its way into several key verses of scripture from Genesis to Revelation. Most importantly, myrrh plays a powerful role in the story of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. It appears in the account of His life not once, not twice, but four distinct times: at His birth, at His crucifixion, upon His death, and at His resurrection.
Why is this such an important observation?
Within ancient Jewish custom, myrrh was an important component to funerary rites in which the body of the deceased was anointed with precious myrrh. For this reason, myrrh has a strong association with death.
And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
John 19:39 KJV
When the Magi brought myrrh as a gift to the Baby Jesus, it was not simply meant to be a luxurious commodity. It was an ominous foreshadowing of the sacrifice that was to come.
According to popular legend, it is said that the myrrh that was carried to the tomb of Jesus was the very same myrrh that was received by the Virgin Mary at the birth of her son. If this is true, it means that the Magi were actually paying for Jesus’ funeral preparations on the very day of his birth. By bringing myrrh as a gift, they were demonstrating that they knew Christ to be the sacrificial Lamb of God, born to die for the sins of humanity.
Do not view myrrh merely as a dark and melancholy symbol of death and suffering. When the female followers of Christ reverently bore myrrh to His tomb, they arrived early in the morning to find the tomb empty. Thus, myrrh has come to take on an entirely new symbolic meaning: Jesus Christ has triumphed over death and offers the promise of resserection to whoever believes in Him. Reflect on this theme as you inhale the rich earthy fragrance of biblical myrrh and give praise to God!
