Myrrh, the pure resin tears of the Commiphora tree, holds a place of deep significance throughout Scripture and the history of the Christian faith. Highly valued in the ancient world, this warm, earthy resin appears repeatedly in the Bible in contexts of anointing, worship, and beauty. Myrrh was used in anointing oils (Exodus 30:23), in the fragrant preparations for Esther (Esther 2:12), and in the solemn rites of burial as shown in John 19:39.

Today, Christians use myrrh to bring the aroma of scripture into their lives by burning it as incense or by offering it as a meaningful faith-based gift just as it was given to Jesus by the Magi (Matthew 2:11). Its rich aroma and deep biblical heritage make myrrh a treasured link to the ancient world and the life of Jesus on Earth.

    The Offering at the Tomb

“When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices [myrrh], so that they might go and anoint him [...]. And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back — it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here.’”
    Mark 16:1–6

Myrrh, possibly the most significant biblical fragrance of all, is the only aroma that makes an appearance at each the Nativity, Crucifixion, burial, and Resurrection of Jesus. As foretold in ancient prophecy, myrrh's powerful symbolic role in the Gospel embodies the very essence of the Christian faith.

      The True Meaning of Myrrh

Explore the symbolic depth behind this rare and sacred oil.

      An Ancient Prophecy

The book of Psalms predicted the coming of a king who's robes were anointed with fragrant burial spices. Myrrh's association with Jewish funerary practices shows that the ancient prophets knew of the nature of His future sacrifice. As foretold, Jesus rose from the dead fragrant with the powerful scent of over seventy pounds of myrrh and aloes.

      Anointing the Anointed

Myrrh was one of oils used to anoint Jesus—the Anointed One—making it a literal fulfillment of His title as Messiah (Hebrew) and Christ (Greek), both meaning “the Anointed One.” The inclusion of Myrrh in the gifts of the Magi pointed to the infant's anointed destiny as a sacrificial lamb.

      The Bitter Cup

Used as a numbing agent, myrrh was mixed with wine and offered to Jesus on the cross. He refused it, choosing instead to bear the full weight of suffering. In this moment, myrrh became a symbol of Christ's choice to suffer by His own free will.

      From Sorrow to Jubilation

The women who carried myrrh to the tomb came in mourning, their hearts heavy with grief and loss. But when they arrived, the stone was rolled away, and the tomb was empty. No longer is myrrh a dark emblem of sorrow and suffering — it has been transformed into a sign of ultimate victory. He is risen!

      A Miracle of Creation

Discover the compounds that make myrrh amazing.

      Curzerene

This warm, earthy molecule is a powerful antioxidant with documented anticancer and antimicrobial activity. It supports immune function, protects the skin from oxidative stress, and contributes to myrrh’s long-standing reputation for purification and healing.

      Lindestrene

Known for its balancing and harmonizing effects, lindestrene contributes to myrrh’s calming aroma and is thought to ease emotional tension. It also supports hormonal equilibrium and deepens the oil’s grounding character, making it a favorite in meditative or spiritual applications.

      Furanoeudesma-1,3-diene

A rare sesquiterpene unique to myrrh, this resinous compound is known for its potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It helps reduce swelling, calm irritation, and soothe chronic discomfort—making it especially useful in muscle and joint blends.

Lord Jesus, thank You for the suffering You endured for my sake. Thank You for bearing the weight of sin and sorrow so that I could know life and hope. Teach me never to forget the depth of Your love, and help me to live each day in humble gratitude for the cross. Amen.

      Everyday Uses for Biblical Resins

      Prayer and Worship

Resins have been burned in Christian worship since the very beginning. Today, several denominations still burn frankincense to symbolize the ascent of our prayers to heaven (Psalm 141:2) and the presence of the Holy Spirit.

      Home Fragrance

Burn resin on charcoal in your home to purify stale air and fill your space with a pleasant fragrance or, for a less smoky alternative, add some resin to a stove top potpourri mix or an electric incense burner.

      Insect Repellent

Burning resins while spending time outside is a great way to ward off pesky mosquitoes and other insects while creating a pleasant and fragrant atmosphere.

      Natural Remedy

These resins have been employed for their various medicinal properties since before the dawn of history. The whole resin contains more healing chemicals in greater concentrations than their essential oil counterparts.

Some Common Questions about Biblical Oils

      keyboard_arrow_down

Why Is Fragrance in the Bible?

Fragrance plays a profound and multifaceted role in the Bible, with aromatic plants and oils mentioned over 600 times throughout Scripture. These fragrances often carry symbolic, spiritual, and literal significance, enriching the biblical narrative in diverse ways.

Fragrance is frequently used as a metaphor for spiritual concepts—such as prayers rising like incense (Psalm 141:2) or the pleasing aroma of Christ’s sacrifice (2 Corinthians 2:15).

Fragrant oils were used in sacred rituals, anointing ceremonies, and purification rites, symbolizing holiness, consecration, and healing.

Fragrant oils and spices were present at key moments in Jesus’ life and ministry—from the gifts of the Magi at His birth (Matthew 2:11) to His anointing before burial (John 19:39-40).

The fragrances mentioned in the Bible invite us to experience God’s presence more deeply. We encourage you to explore these sacred aromas by reading the verses referenced on our bottles, allowing the fragrance to connect you with Scripture in a tangible and meaningful way.

      Why Use Biblical Fragrance?

Scent is one of the most powerful sensory experiences, capable of evoking vivid memories and emotions while forming deep neurological connections. The Bible deliberately uses sensory imagery to create a more lasting impression of its teachings, engaging not just the mind but also the senses.

Experiencing the aromas mentioned in Scripture helps unlock nuances of meaning that can be missed when only reading the text. For example, the scent of frankincense evokes images of worship and intercession, while myrrh recalls both the birth and burial of Jesus.

Engaging with biblical fragrances allows believers to immerse themselves more fully in the biblical narrative, making it a more tangible and memorable spiritual experience.

By using these fragrances—particularly those featured prominently in the Gospel and Old Testament—you can deepen your understanding of Scripture and create lasting sensory connections to key moments in biblical history.

Great care has been taken to ensure that the oils in this collection reflect the historical and scriptural significance of the original plants and resins mentioned in the Bible.

      keyboard_arrow_down

Is it even OK for Christians to Use Essential Oils?

Yes, absolutely! Essential oils were commonly used by biblical figures for physical, medicinal, and aromatic purposes. Using them in this way is perfectly aligned with Scripture. However, it’s important to approach them with biblical understanding and avoid incorporating New Age practices or attributing mystical powers to the oils. Instead, use them as natural gifts from God that can enhance wellness and serve as an aid in Bible study.
